IDF Prepares for
"War Month"
The Primary IDF Exercise For 2021 Will Take Place Over An Entire Month
As part of the exercises and training regimen for 2021, the Chief of the General Staff, Lt. Gen. Aviv Kohavi, stated that the primary readiness event for 2021 will be "War Month". War Month is a General Staff exercise that will take place for the first time this year, consisting of four weeks of extended, continuous, and challenging training. The exercise will simulate real scenarios in order to increase the IDF's wartime readiness.
The exercise will involve active and reserve IDF personnel from all commands, branches, and services, and will include participation from combat forces in the air, at sea and on land. In addition, national authorities, the Ministry of Defense, the National Emergency Authority, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other security organizations will also participate.
The outline of the exercise includes multi-arena scenarios in the north and south in accordance with the most current intelligence assessments. During the month, all facets of combat will be simulated - multidimensional defense, reducing the threat of rocket fire, mitigating enemy operations, and utilizing multidimensional strikes to strike enemy weapons, headquarters, training complexes, infrastructure and command and control capabilities.
The exercise will simulate diverse synchronized maneuvering in the depth of enemy terrain, based on General Staff capabilities and deployment of special forces.
The director of the exercise will be the commander of the Readiness and Training Command and Commander of the IDF’s General Staff Corps, Maj. Gen. Moti Baruch. For the benefit of the exercise, a multi-service administration will be established, consisting of representatives of all IDF branches, as well as from the political echelon and additional security organizations.
During War Month, a full General Staff battle procedure will be carried out and the General Headquarters will practice war scenarios in order to practice deploying force of varying scope and intensity.
As part of the exercise’s preliminary preparation and structuring, a number of courses on core issues will be held: operational continuity, critical thinking, strategy and decision-making and more.
As part of the exercise, multi-branch research and observation teams will generate after-action reviews alongside lessons learned from previous General Staff exercises.
The timing of the exercise has been set with the expectation that precautionary coronavirus procedures will allow for it. At the same time, the nature of the exercise, and its suitability for occurring within coronavirus procedures is subject to an ongoing situational assessment that will be concluded near the time of the exercise.
