The IDF “Chariots of Fire” Exercise has Commenced

This month-long large-scale exercise will train the IDF for intense multi-armed and multi-arena combat in
the air, at sea, on land and in the cyber arena

This week begins the “Chariots of Fire” four-week large-scale military exercise.

The IDF's top priority is to protect Israeli civilians and strengthen the sense of security within the State of Israel. Throughout the exercise, IDF soldiers will continue to carry out counterterrorism activities and strengthen defensive efforts at the Judea and Samaria security barrier during the exercise.

"Chariots of Fire" is a unique exercise which aims to both increase the IDF's defensive readiness and examine its preparedness for an intensive and prolonged campaign. The exercise will include both regular and reserve IDF personnel from all commands, branches and directorates. IDF combat units, headquarters and professional arrays will all participate in the exercise.

The Chief of the General Staff, LTG Kohavi, defined the goals of the “Chariots of Fire” Exercise, which include: improving the IDF’s operational systems and defensive readiness for a campaign, realizing the ‘operating concept of victory’ regarding the IDF’s ability to conduct a sequence of high-rate operational and defensive activities and multidimensional maneuvering, applying lessons learned from Operation “Guardian of the Walls”, examining the operational course of action of all IDF personnel, ranging from the headquarters level to the operational end.

The wide-ranging and multi-faceted “Chariots of Fire” exercise will include a combination of multi-armed and multi-dimensional capabilities on land, in the air, at sea, and in both the cyber and spectral dimensions. The exercise will also simulate a multi-branched logistical response and fire support capabilities. The exercise will also test the joint cooperation capabilities between various security organizations and government ministries. In addition, the exercise will examine the course of action of all IDF personnel, ranging from the General Staff to the tactical level.

The exercise will train the IDF's response to challenges from developing events across various arenas, as well as emergency scenarios in both military and civilian spaces. In addition, operational activities will be trained in various scenarios and will test assistance efforts and life-saving capabilities on Israel's Home Front.

The exercise will also include two large-scale divisional exercises, and will include both regular and reserve servicemembers.

As part of the exercise, joint research and learning teams will be assigned from different branches to review select topics. The teams will operate to improve the functional abilities of the IDF while applying lessons learned from the current and previous General Staff exercises.

During the exercise, and continuing throughout the month, large-scale movement of security forces including military and armored vehicles, aircraft and vessels will be seen.

The "Chariots of Fire" exercise was planned in advance as part of the IDF's 2022 training schedule.
