New Commanding Officer takes over Unit 8200
The Chief of the General Staff awarded Unit 8200 with a certificate of appreciation "for wide-ranging operational activity that has accomplished many achievements of high importance to the security of the state."
Brig. Gen. Y. took up his position as commander of Unit 8200 in the Intelligence Directorate in place of Brig. Gen. A., who is ending his four-year term in office today (Sunday).
As part of the ceremony, the Chief of the General Staff, Lt. Gen. Aviv Kohavi, presented a certificate of appreciation to Unit 8200.
The award was given in light of intelligence breakthroughs in the various theaters and dimensions of operations- while demonstrating innovation, creativity, excellence and daring, and thanks to a partnership in large-scale operational activities that has brought many achievements of high importance to national security.
The change of command ceremony was held at the Glilot base in a limited format, in accordance with coronavirus restrictions.
The ceremony was presided over by the Chief of the General Staff, and in the presence of the Head of the Intelligence Directorate, Maj. Gen. Tamir Heyman and the families of Brig. Gen. Y. and Brig. Gen. A.
The Chief of the General Staff, at the ceremony: "The State of Israel regularly faces many threats. All theaters are active and all theaters require real-time up-to-date intelligence - anti-rocket, anti-intrusion, anti-cyber, anti-ship and anti-aircraft threats. Intelligence is tightly intertwined in all these theaters. Just this past weekend we received a reminder in one of these theaters from one of the biggest threats in the region, Iran, and we were reminded that Iran is not only a nuclear threat, but that it spreads terrorism and carries out terrorism and actions against civilian targets. This is the place to reiterate that the IDF is acting and will act in the face of the threats that endanger it from both near and far, and as usual it will do so using the excellent intelligence that the Intelligence Directorate provides; one of the core pillars of which is, of course, Unit 8200. For this exceptional work, unit 8200 receives a clear expression of appreciation. For its performance and also for its partnership with all the headquarters at the General Staff and the security organizations in the State of Israel. We all enjoy excellent intelligence based on its unprecedented breakthroughs".
The Head of the Intelligence Directorate: “A., during your time in this position, there were dramatic breakthroughs in the unit's capabilities. These unprecedented achievements have continued to position Unit 8200 as a global cyber power, an organization that can achieve anything, with no obstacle that it cannot overcome. You’ve positioned the cyber domain as a central theater of warfare - in collection, attack, defense and influence. You used your experience from special operations to turn it from an intelligence-technology unit into an operational-intelligence-technology unit.
Y., in every role you’ve maintained, you have made revolutionary changes. Like all 8200 commanders before you, the challenge is to take the best organization in its field and make it even better. The State of Israel needs that".
